WHAT IS FOLIC ACID?

Folic acid is a water soluble vitamin (vitamin В9) necessary for cell division and growth. A pregnant woman needs this supplement in order to produce, repair and help DNA function – our genetic card and a base for building the fetal cells. Folic acid is necessary for the whole metabolic process too. It mediates the transfer of the amino acid homocystein found in the blood into metionin. If the folic acid intake is insufficient, homocystein in the blood turns to be in excess and this might be risky for malformations of the infant.

 

Folic acid protects pregnant women from thromboses, reduces the incidence of spontaneous abortions, and reduces the risk of delivering babies with brain and spinal cord impairments.
