Alpha Lipoic Acid – ADIPHARM
EFFECTIVE AGENT FOR PREVENTION OF NEUROPATHIC DIABETIC FOOT
Dr. Rumen Bogdanov, chairman of the Bulgarian Association of Diabetic Foot Treatment, specialization in King’s College Hospital, London, Great Britain:
Dr. Bogdanov, what is a diabetic foot?
The foot of every diabetic patient due to extremely reduced superficial and deep sensitiveness, worsened blood supply and orthopedic changes is exposed to a great risk for development of ulcers, gangrene and later amputation.
What can we do for prevention of the complicated neuropathic diabetic foot?
Effective agent for prevention of diabetic foot is alpha-lipoic acid.
- What is alpha-lipoic acid?
- Alpha-lipoic acid helps building the nerves in the human body. It is a coenzyme necessary for some basic for the cells biochemical reactions associated with carbohydrates metabolism. The human body produces alpha-lipoic acid but in a small quantity. It can be taken by food (potatoes, yeast, liver, red meat) as well as a food supplement. Due to the long-term duration of diabetes and the high blood glucose levels, the nerve coating becomes damaged. This leads to tingling, feeling as if ants are creeping over the feet and sometimes pain.Pains can be constant or darting and usually occur at night. Feet on touch are with normal temperature and people with diabetes mellitus feel them very cold or very hot.
- What happens if measures are not taken on time?
If the nerve coating does not restore, reduction in the superficial and deep sensitiveness, shortening of the tendons, and curving of the fingers occurs (like fingers of a rapacious bird). Callus formations (corn) are accumulated and there is a risk for development of internal neuropathic wounds. These are wounds for which there is no external reason. In my center every day at least 15 people with severe wounds on their feet come and most of them are threatened with early invalidization. In Bulgaria, there are approximately 250 000 people with diabetes mellitus and our clinical observations reveal that about 57% of them develop late complications.
- How to take alpha-lipoic acid?
- The daily intake of alpha-lipoic acid should be 600 milligrams administered in dose 1 capsule of 300 milligrams 2 times daily for a period of three months.
– What is the advantage of alpha-lipoic acid produced by “Adipharm”?
- Alpha-lipoic acid of “Adipharm” is high-standard Bulgarian product and is available to everybody. The performed clinical observation of a team of the Bulgarian Association of Diabetic Foot Treatment revealed that alpha-lipoic acid of Adipharm significantly reduces the neuropathic pain, improves the feeling for warm and cold differentiation, and improves the feeling for touch. Alpha-lipoic acid dose not cause side effects.
